Commissioning

CommissioningMilitary Vision Standards for Enlistment/CommissioningThe vision requirements for military service are typically set in stone, however there are a few vision waivers depending upon the circumstances, the job, and the experience and education level of the candidate seeking enlistment or commission. There are twocommon waivers for vision, and both arelaser eye repair surgeries that have evolved to the point at which the technology enables people with poor vision to serve in military professions for which near-perfect vision is a requirement like pilot or special verarbeitungsschritts LASIKLaser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis is an operation on the eyes that corrects the shape of the cornea so that it bends light properly.PRKPhotorefractive Keratectomy is the predecessor to LASIK but is still performed today and is waiverable after a six-month recovery process and review. Both surgeries reshape the cornea with a laser, and can help you if you are near-sighted, far-sighted, or have astigmatism. PRK Versus LASIK The United States started performing laser eye surgery in 1995 and has a very high success rate. The military started accepting waivers for this eye surgery in 1997 on a trial basis with special operations (SEAL, EOD, and Diver, for example) candidates and then for pilots. Now, it is an acceptable surgery for all candidates seeking service in the military. PRK and LASIK have both had significant advancements during this time and remain an option for many people who wear glasses and have disqualifying eye vision. PRK and LASIK results are similar. Most people achieve 20/20 vision after PRK surgery, and nearly all patients achieve 20/40 visual acuity or better. Both are within vision standards of the military specialty jobs. Current distant visual acuity of any degree that does not correct with spectacle lenses to at least one of the following (InternationalClassification of Disease ICD code 367) is cause for rejection or disqualification 20/ 40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye (ICD 369.75)20/30 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye (ICD 369.75)20/20 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye (ICD 369.73) However, for entrance into a military academy, distant visual acuity that does not correct to 20/20 in each eye is disqualifying. For entrance into ROTC programs and OCS/OTS, distant visual acuity that does not correct to 20/20 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye is disqualifying. Current near visual acuity of any degree that does not correct to 20/40 in the better eye (ICD 367.1 to 367.32). Current refractive error (hyperopia (ICD 367.0), myopia (ICD 367.1), astigmatism (ICD 367.2x)), in excess of -8.00 or 8.00 diopters spherical equivalent or astigmatism in excess of 3.00 diopters. Any condition that requires contact lenses for adequate correction of vision, such as corneal scars and opacities (ICD 370.0x) and irregular astigmatism (ICD 367.22). Color vision (ICD 368.5x) requirements shall be set by the individua l Services. Within the Navy and seestreitkraft Corps, another disqualifying vision requirement for some jobs in the military is thecolor vision standard. Color vision will be tested because adequatecolor visionis a prerequisite for entry into many military specialties. However, for entrance into a military academy or ROTC or OCS/OTS programs, the inability to distinguish and identify without confusion the color of an object, substance, material, or light that is uniformly colored a vivid red or vivid green is disqualifying. Contact Lenses Complicated cases requiring contact lenses for adequate correction of vision, such as corneal scars (ICD 371) and irregular astigmatism (ICD 367.2). Derived from Department of Defense (DOD) Directive 6130.03, Physical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, and Induction, and DOD Instruction 6130.03 (2011 update), Criteria and Procedure Requirements for Physical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction in the Armed Forces.

6 Tips for Turning an Internship into a Full Time Job, with Nicole Williams of WORKS

6 Tips for Turning an Internship into a Full Time Job, with Nicole Williams of WORKS6 Tips for Turning an Internship into a Full Time Job, with Nicole Williams of WORKS28entry-level jobs and in eigener sacheships galore But just what is the best way to land these positions and turn them into staff positions? turned to Nicole Williams, founder of WORKS, a career development company for young professionals, for her tips.Keep reading for tips from Nicole Williams on how to turn entry-level jobs and internships in staff positions1. What types of entry level jobs and internships are you seeing for the college graduating Class of 2012?Due to the ever-growing baby boomer population, healthcare jobs are plentiful. And as social technology grows so do jobs in tech and social media. Weve also seen a surge in marketing opportunities.2. For a young professional hoping to get their foot in the door of a company, what is the best approach? Before you start sending out dozens of resumes, stop and do some research. Turn to your existing contacts for help before competing with 1,000s of other qualified candidates. Internships and jobs are primarily found through connections. Make a list of the top 15 companies youd like to intern for. Log into LinkedIn and start following these companies. You can see if any of your first or second degree contacts works at one of these places. If so, reach out to them and ask them about their internship program.3. For unpaid internships, do you have any advice to help young professionals not be taken advantage of?Its not uncommon for employers to take advantage of new internship hires. While on the initial interview ask about the day to day job description and ultimately about the probability of a paid job being a reality at the end of the internship. Remember in any internship (and entry level job) there is bound to be some slack work but dont hesitate to take the initiative. Join appropriate LinkedIn Groups to be privy to industry discussion to bring back to your team. Your goal is to contribute as much as possible. Dont hesitate to ask about the goals the employer is seeking to achieve in hiring an intern. Will you in charge of your own projects like growing the social media network? Building their blog? Helping with market research? Come prepared with a list of skills youd like to develop in helping to make the company better.4. And are there perks they should be asking for since they are unpaid? There are plenty of perks that interns can ask for. Typically, if an internship is unpaid they might be able to offer you a stipend for lunch or travel. Other soft perks you can ask for are to have weekly meetings with various departments at the company in order to get a better understanding of the inner workings of those fields. The other major perk of an internship is the opportunity to build relationships with people you can learn from and/or get hired by. Ask for introductions while youre in your internship and dont leave wi thout as many recommendations as possible to help verify the quality of work youve contributed. Also, since you arent making any money and need to support yourself, you could ask for flexible hours to accommodate earning income at a part time job.5. At what point should an intern ask a company to consider them for a staff position within the company and what steps do you recommend they do to prepare before approaching the company? An intern should let it be known within the first interview that being hired full-time is their end goal. They should have a chat with their boss on their first week about the internship process and about the possibility of turning the internship into a full-time job. Remember that an internship is an opportunity for this company to try you out and the job offer will depend on your job performance. While you should check expectations at the beginning of the internship, its best to ask about the staff position once youve been able to prove your value.6. Any other advice for those hoping to intern and current interns hoping to obtain company employment status?Look, listen, and learn. The best thing about a fabulous internship is getting the insider scoop on your industry, so make sure to observe the processes, systems, and politics that are in place. Also sit in on meetings when you can and take note of not only whats being said, but whos saying it.Go above and beyond. Take a cue from your friendly neighborhood latte provider and follow the Starbucks initiative Just say yes. Say yes to any assignments that come your way, complete them before deadline - then ask for more.Keep in touch. According to Nicole Williams, once your internship is over, your career is just beginning. abflug it off on the right foot by sending a follow-up message with industry questions and ask your supervisor if you can use them as a reference. Connect with them on LinkedIn so theyll always be a part of your professional network. Staying in good standing with yo ur internship contacts will enable you to send them personal promotional material and apply to job openings in comfort, when the time comes, either via them or one of their many contacts. To learn more about Nicole Williams, visit WORKS.

How to Earn More Money in 2019 With Side Gigs

How to Earn More Money in 2019 With Side GigsHow to Earn More Money in 2019 With Side Gigs When you hear the phrase gig economy, you probably think of apps, like Uber, TaskRabbit or Instacart. But the truth is, theres a whole world of side gigs out there, available online and off, for all sorts of people. With positions as varied as Courier, Lesson Plan Creator, Personal Financial Advisor, Search Engine Evaluator, Online Community Manager and many mora, theres a side hustle for virtually every differentskill set and passion. And the best part is, it can often be pretty financially lucrative - especially if you take on a side gig on top of your full-time job. Say hello to extra income for vacations, shopping sprees or even those pesky bills that always seem to pile up.But with so many options available, navigating which side hustle is right for you, how you enter the field and what the pay is can be intimidating,to say the least. Thats whereElana Varon, author o f The Ultimate Side Hustle Book 450 Moneymaking Ideas for the Gig Economy , saw an opportunity. Varons new bookgoes into the what, why and how of side gigs, as well as real-life stories from those who have taken them on. According to Varon, the benefits of taking on a side hustle are significant. Most people who take on a side hustle want the extra money, so thats a big benefit. But if youre exploring a new career, a side hustle can help you learn about other types of work you can do and get experience in the field. And hopefully, youre able to spend your time doing something you enjoy, Varon said. And for those concerned with work-life balance, dont worry - there are plenty of side hustle options that dont require workingaround the clock. The beauty of a lot of side hustles today is that you can decide how much you want to work,Varon added.Glassdoor recently got the chance to chat with Varon to get her insight on what makes a great side hustle, how to balance full-time work with pa rt-time gigs and some of the most surprising side hustles out there (think mushroom farmer). Heres what she had to say.Glassdoor What initially inspired you to write this book?Elana Varon Side hustles have come out of the shadows, but with all thats written about them, there wasnt a comprehensive resource to help people figure out what they could really do, or how to go about it. Some side hustlers are entrepreneurs, but a lot of people are simply looking to make some extra cash, or finance a hobby. They can all use the book to get ideas that fit with their skills and interests, available time and financial goals, as well as get tips for finding and managing their gigs. Also, Ive been researching and writing for years about the impact of technology on the workplace. This book was an opportunity to dig into the flip side - how gig economy platforms, social media, recommendation sites and other technologies are influencing how people find work and earn a living.Elana Varon The idea l side hustle is work that fits your skills, interests and available time, and that enables you to meet your goals. Most people who take on a side hustle want the extra money, so thats a big benefit. But if youre exploring a new career, a side hustle can help you learn about other types of work you can do and get experience in the field. And hopefully, youre able to spend your time doing something you enjoy.Elana Varon The beauty of a lot of side hustles today is that you can decide how much you want to work. So the first thing to do is have a concrete goal. Its a lot easier to manage your time when you know what youre trying to accomplish. Then be realistic about how many hours you have, so you can choose a side hustle that fits both your goals and the rest of your life - which includes sleeping . If you dont get enough rest, your performance and your health will suffer, and not just in the long term.So if you travel a lot for work, renting your apartment out on Airbnb might b e a better fit than tending bar on weekends. If youre a stay-at-home parent , caring for your children is your full-time job (even though youre not getting paid for it), so youre going to need a side hustle that you can work on when your partner is home or your kids are in school. There are some situations, of course, where people are going to decide to push their limits - maybe they have to cover an unexpected bill, or theyre launching a full-time business or they have to put in extra hours in their main job. But hopefully those periods are temporary.Elana Varon I talked to a few people whose side hustles turned into full-time businesses , and some people started their side hustles with that goal in mind. If you want to take that route, you need a plan, and you have to be comfortable with the risks. From working your side hustle, you probably have an idea of how much money you can potentially make if you do the job full time, but most people wont earn that much right away. One of the biggest adjustments people have to make when becoming self-employed is figuring out how theyre going to pay their bills - both for the business and themselves personally - while theyre building up their customer base and revenue. You also have to be ready to spend a lot more time on the marketing, financial and administrative aspects of your business, or find someone to help you. We used to do our own taxes, but when I started my writing and editing business, preparing the returns became more complicated. So we hired an accountant who not only prepares our returns but also gives us advice. Finally, if you have people who live with you or depend on you, make sure theyre on board. Youll have to renegotiate household and (if you have kids) childcare responsibilities. You may have to cut back on your household spending for a while. And depending on what kind of work you do, it may be a while before you are able to eat dinner uninterrupted or stay off email while youre on vacati on - or even take a vacation.Elana Varon A couple of things Most people are used to paying their taxes via withholding. They dont get a W-2 from their side gig, so they dont think about what else they might owe. But if you make more than a few hundred dollars from your side hustles, you have to pay taxes on those earnings. Because ridesharing and TaskRabbit have received a lot of media attention, theres a tendency to think of side hustles as defined by work you get via apps or platforms. But a lot of jobs arent well-represented on gig platforms, at least not yet, and most people actually still get work the old fashioned way, through friends and colleagues.Elana Varon I was struck by how many people I talked to had serial or multiple side hustles. I expected it from Millennials, who in general are more likely to freelance than older generations and grew up assuming they would have multiple careers. But Gen Xers and Baby Boomers also told me about having a lot of different gigs. You might conclude from this that people arent feeling financially secure, and that was true for some. But I heard a lot of pragmatism. People saying, Sure, I like this, but its still work, so I want to get paid.Elana Varon I dont think there are any universally top or best side hustles, because people have different skills, interests and goals. But monetizing assets you already have can get you a relatively high return on your efforts. I interviewed someone who lives in an urban neighborhood where there wasnt much parking - on the street or off. For a while he had a house with a two-car driveway, which was rare. And since he had only one car, he rented out the unused half. He didnt have to do any extra work other than putting an ad on Craigslist and talk to the tenant occasionally, so that was pretty close to free money .Those kinds of side hustles, where you can get value from things that are otherwise idle are interesting because theres theoretically no limit to what you can r ent out - boats, clothes, tools, RVs. There has to be demand for it, obviously, but sharing platforms have expanded the possibilities. While I was doing my research, I also became fascinated with mushroom farming. Maybe youve seen the kits for growing a log of shiitake mushrooms in your basement, but it turns out that if you have enough space and enough time, you can raise a profitable little crop. Its not for me, though. I have trouble keeping houseplants aliveWant a few more side hustle ideas to get you started? Consider these optionsDidnt find the right position? Dont worry - theres a virtually unlimited number of options available, so if you havent found the right one yet, dont get discouraged. Think about what you do best and how you can monetize it, and be sure to check out The Ultimate Side Hustle Book for more ideas

Why Hard Work Isn#8217;t Enough to Succeed

Why Hard Work Isn8217t Enough to Succeed Why Hard Work Isn8217t Enough to Succeed One of the most common messages I received as a child was, Work hard, and you will be rewarded. This sentiment was echoed by loved ones, teachers, and mentors. Theres a good chance you, too, heard the same rumor about life being fair and equitable.Dont get me wrong Hard work is a critical component of success. However, the fact isthat theres mora to it than just hard work. This can be a tough lesson to learn, especially for young professionals.Even the BestWorkers Dont Always Get RewardedIts not uncommon for a newly minted graduate to work harder than their colleagues do. They may even be smarter and contribute mora new ideas. In some cases, they also save the company more money or generate more in sales. On the surface, it seems obvious Im smarter. I work longer hours. I produce more revenue. I should be paid more. Right? Not necessarily. At least, not yet. After working for one to two years at a job,ma nyyoung professionals begin to feelfrustrated. They have proven themselves. Theyve worked long hours. And theyve figured out just how much more their lazy coworker makes than they do.So, the young graduatedoes what seems natural They ask their boss for a raise. Theyre shocked to learn that its not in the cards for them at least, not in the way they were hoping. Sadly, companies generally only give 2-4percent raises annually. This is oftenthe case even if youre a great employee. Your future pay ata company is almost always based on your current pay.Companies also want to ensure that employees have room to grow each year. If you receive the top pay available today, how will they incentivize you over the next five years? (Thats their reasoning, anyway.)Perception Counts Just as Much as RealityOften, your value is tied as much toperception as it is toreality. You may work hard at your desk for hours on end, but if no one knows about it, they wont know your true value. This perceived for m of value is created through building relationships with your boss, upper management, and your colleagues.Your value may also be tied to how rare your skills are. How difficult is it to replace you? How many people are available who can also do the same work? The more unique your skills are, the better. If those unique skills also generate a lot ofrevenue for the company, youre even more likely to be perceived as irreplaceable.Just remember Putting in your dues is where its at. Keep in mind the valuable experience youre gaining. When you were in college, you would have gladly worked for free. After youve put in your time and are ready to move up, consider moving on. Even the best employees are lucky to receive small raises. An external move can sometimes increase your overall pay by more than 30 percent at one time. And when you do receive your next offer, use your negotiation skills to get the best start possible.A version of this article originally appeared onThe Memphis Daily New s.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm, Copeland Coaching.

6 Career Risks Worth Taking

6 Career Risks Worth Taking6 Career Risks Worth TakingSoon after Cathy Engelbert, CPA, took the helm at Deloitte a few years ago - making her the first female chief executive of a Big Four accounting and consulting firm - the Journal of Accountancy interviewed her about her formula for accounting career success and shared her message about taking career risks.Engelbert said she enjoyed roles in different segments of the auditing profession, financial reporting and internal controls. After becoming a mother and learning to balance professional priorities with child rearing, she found a niche in financial instruments consulting. Along the way, she developed a broad skill set, a strong rapport with colleagues and a reputation as an accounting ace with C-level leadership abilities. She encourages younger managers wanting to move up to try different paths as she did.Take risks in your careerTake risks in your career, she told the JofA, reflecting on a business history spanning three dec ades. Do something different so you build your capabilities, build your followership, build your leadership skills, and have passion for what you do.Engelberts choices, leading up to her historic appointment at Deloitte, illustrate how taking calculated career risks now and then can be beneficial, especially when it comes to the accounting profession. Why take a chance? You worked hard to move up the ranks as an accountant. And so it may seem like a safer bet to rely on the certainty and stability of your current position and avoid the unknown. The risk in leid taking any career risks, however, is that you might be left stuck where you are. You might miss out on opportunities to expand your skills and experience, meet prospective employers or mentor up-and-coming accountants.Six worthwhile accounting career risksWere not talking about behaving impulsively. Rather, the career risks you should consider are those that might make you a better employee, help you move up in the finance worl d and leave you feeling more professionally satisfied.Still nervous about stepping out of your comfort zone? Lets consider the advantages of embracing change. Here are six accounting career risks with promising returns1. Ask for moreDo you feel youre growing professionally in your current position? If not, its time for a change. Will it require a specific financial certification? Do your homework, write up a proposal and ask the company to pay for your training. Feel like your job description is in need of updating, and for that matter your salary, too? Perhaps, a promotion is in order. Nows the time to revisit your day-to-day duties with your boss and - if you feel strongly that youre undercompensated or your job description needs an upgrade - ask for a raise. Even if you dont get one, your supervisor will know that you value yourself and your contributions to the organization.Benchmark your salary with Robert Halfs latest Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance.2. Try a differen t roleWhen opportunity knocks, do you slam the door shut or welcome it in? A sure way not to get a higher-level management position is never to apply. If a recruiter contacts you, the riskier but potentially more rewarding response is to say, Why not? and engage the opportunity.3. Look beyond salaryYour take-home pay is important, and nobody wants to go backward on salary, but money is not the only consideration when weighing the pros and cons of your current job or an offer on the table. Maybe youre feeling burned out by the travel demands and long hours of your public accounting job, but youre not sure you can find a better alternative.Take a serious look at the importance of a work-life balance and what youd be willing to trade for having less job-related stress. Even if a prospective company doesnt have the same name recognition as your current employer, but it has a better workplace culture and work-life balance, its worth strongly considering. Nonmonetary employee perks such a s flexible schedules, extra vacation days and remote work options can go a long way toward keeping you happy in your career, and at home.4. Network beyond your pay gradeIts easy to associate with colleagues who mirror your skill sets and responsibilities, but to what end? Get outside your comfort zone and expand your professional network. Meet with peers outside the accounting and finance world, and get in the habit of having coffee, lunch or a happy-hour beverage with financial pros in different roles than you. You might learn something new. Also, you never know where you might meet your next boss or stellar job reference.5. Go back to schoolIf youre feeling stuck in a rut or bored in your job, the solution might be as simple as learning a few new Excel tips to make your workday more productive and efficient.Keep learning and get more advice for your finance and accounting career.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER6. Make a bold changeIf all roads lead to dead-ends at your job, and youve d iscussed your concerns with your boss to no avail, it may be time to branch out. Think about testing the waters with a startup company or partnering with a colleague and launching your own accounting firm. You could also cut back on your hours by taking a temporary job while you explore a new industry. In any scenario, youll need to do research on possible outcomes of each of your choices and have a backup plan. Its daunting to take chances and embrace change. But remember Engelberts advice Build your capabilities, your followership, your leadership skills, and have passion for what you do.mora often than not, career risks can lead to better opportunities and professional fulfillment.Editors note This post was updated recently to reflect current information.

How to Write a Follow-Up Email After Youve Submitted Your Resume

How to Write a Follow-Up emaille After Youve Submitted Your ResumeHow to Write a Follow-Up schmelzglas After Youve Submitted Your ResumeIf youve sent your resume and cover letter (or any other form ofjob application) to an employer and havent heard back, considersending a follow-up email. You can also follow up with an email message if youdont hear back after a job interview. Unfortunately, employers dont always keep applicants informed about the status of their application. Therefore you may need to reach out to determine your status. If done strategically, following up can be a great way to reinforce why you are qualified for the job, and can even get your application a closer look. An email is a quickand efficient way to reach out to the employer. A mailed letter might take too longan employer might make a hiring decision in that time. A phone call is another option, but you may not be able to getcontact information for the hiring manager. However you choose to reach out, make sur e you are polished, professional, and polite. How to Write a Follow-Up Email Send itafter two weeks. If you havent heardback from the employer two weeks after sending your resume and cover letter, consider sending an email. Dont send it any earlier. You want to give the employer enough time to read and respond to your application.Send an email, if possible.Employers typically prefer receiving this kind of message by email it allows them to keep a record of your contact, and they can respond quickly. However, if you need an even quicker response (say, for example, you know they are supposed to make a hiring decision very soon), you can try reaching out to the employer by phone. Use a clear subject line.In the subject line, include the title of the job you are applying forand your name. This will allow the employer to know exactly what the email is about right away.Be courteous. You want to be as polite and professional as possible in your email. Begin with a polite salutation and u se the employer or hiring managers name if you have it. Begin the email by thanking the employer for taking the time to look at and consider your resume.Keep it brief. Dont write an extremely long email. Keep it brief so that the employer can quickly skim it and understand your purpose. Focus on why you are a good fit.Briefly remind the employer why you are a good fit for the job. If you have any new information you want to share (such as a new achievement at work), you might mention that here.Ask any questions. If you have any questions related to the job or the application process, you can ask them at the end of the email.Mention a visit. If you live far away, you might want to mention a time when you will be visiting the area and are available to meet.Review and Edit. This email is another opportunity to make a good first impression on the employer. Make sure your email is professional andthoroughly edited. Review Email Examples It is a good idea to review email examples and/or templates before writing your follow-up email. 3 of the most common mistakes first-time entrepreneurs make

3 of the most common mistakes first-time entrepreneurs make3 of the most common mistakes first-time entrepreneurs makeSmall businesses fail - a lot. According to a Business Insider report, an estimated 50-70% of small businesses will fail within their first 18 months. I know firsthand that departureing your own business can feel like youre dodging one disaster after the next. No matter how many companies youve worked at before, how many advanced degrees you hold, or how much industry experience youve amassed, you will make mistakes. Some of these mistakes will be frustrating, but youll bounce back. There will always a learning curve associated with anything you do. But what if you could avoid making the same mistakes that sink other startups?Identifying what actions cause failure and learning how to avoid them is a bit more challenging. Picking the wrong co-founder, for example, is cited as a common schwierigkeit entrepreneurs face. The relationship you have with your partner and the skills they bring to your startup can set the tone for success or failure. All too often, entrepreneurs lack sufficient self-awareness regarding their own strengths and weaknesses, and dont choose a partner with complementary skills.Ive worked in my fair share of entrepreneurial environments over the years, and have certainly made mistakes along the way. From my personal experience, these are three of the most common mistakes first-time entrepreneurs make. Theyre three mistakes I have made myself, and ultimately learned the hard way how to avoid repeating them in the future.Hiring employees based on salary requirements rather than talent or experienceWhen funds are tight, foregoing top talent can help cut costs. But those short-term savings can haunt you down the road. Talented people know their value. Sure, some may be willing to take a small pay cut to join your team, but theyre not going to work for peanuts.Using cost as the primary driver for hiring decisions is one of the b iggest mistakes I made at my startup. Despite being advised against this approach, I went with my (incorrect) instincts to hire unproven and inexperienced employees. I thought I was being smart by being scrappy. I believed I could train these employees to make up for their lack of experience. I got what I paid for poor execution, with output lacking in both quality and quantity. A better approach? Hire for fit.Waiting to launch the perfect productYour product will never be perfect. The longer you wait to launch, the more you will start to obsess over details that ultimately wont matter to the user. Build something quickly, get the early model out, and start testing. Otherwise you risk sinking significant time, energy and financial resources in a product that is not aligned with consumer needs. When I founded my startup, we acquired a product that we could have gone to market with on day one. But my background at Fortune 500 companies and product teams had conditioned me to a very exa cting product standard. Consequently, I resisted launching since the product wasnt perfect. Instead, I decided to rebuild it from scratch. I wanted to incorporate new technology stacks and deliver a superior user experience. After months of execution, we were way off of our development timeline and not even remotely close to launching the new version. In the end, we were forced to launch our initial product and saw significant traction within a matter of just weeks. What if we had launched sooner? The right thing to do would have been to launch with a minimal viable product, test it for market fit, identify problems, and evolve the product accordingly.Failing to create and listen to an effective sttze groupWho has your back? A strong support network should. When I founded my startup, I became consumed by day-to-day management. I knew it was important to build a network of advisors, but I kept putting it off. As a result, I made strategic mistakes that experienced advisors would have caught (and advised against) if only I had taken the time to actually build my advisory team in the first place.Being a successful entrepreneur takes more than just accepting that you do not know everything. You need to proactively take steps to surround yourself with the people who can make up for these knowledge gaps and who will speak up to stop mistakes. Seek their advice and act on it.Starting your own business is inherently a risky venture. You may not be able to control external factors, like a sudden fluctuation in global markets. But there are many factors that are within your control. The biggest one? How you react to mistakes. Even if you avoid making the mistakes I discussed above, its inevitable that other mistakes will happen along the way. Dont let your business become a failure statistic. Acknowledge what went wrong, pivot where necessary, and keep moving forward with a new plan.Rana Gujral is an Entrepreneur, CEO, Investor and is involved with several startups. 10 E ntrepreneurs to follow in 2017 - Huffington Post.BusinessCollective, launched in partnership with Citi, is a virtual mentorship program powered by North Americas most ambitious young thought leaders, entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners.
